Vineyards

Don Cristóbal owns 200 hectares of land, including 147 hectares of vineyards, 91 of which are organic, located in the prime areas surrounding the city of Mendoza.

The diverse soils and altitudes in each of our vineyards enable us to cultivate high-quality and healthy organic grapes.

Mendoza, the largest and most significant wine-producing province in Argentina, is renowned as the home of Malbec. Indeed, Mendoza accounts for approximately 75% of the country’s wine production. It stands out as a distinctive wine growing region due to the combination of factors including climate, soil and altitude.

Mendoza’s climate is characterized by abundant heat, sunlight and arid growing conditions. With an average of 300 days of sunshine per year, prolonged droughts of several months are not uncommon. Consequently, Mendoza’s wines often boast ripe fruit flavors, and the reds exhibit riper, softer tannins.

The region experiences limited rainfalls, receiving less tan 200 millimeters per year. To provide the necessary water for vine survival, vineyards rely on irrigation sourced from rivers cascading down the Andes Mountains and from deep water wells.

Soils at the base of the Andes tend to be alluvial with a high proportion of sand and loam, and are low in organic material. This natural composition helps control vine vigor and yield. The sandy loam is underlain with river rocks providing excellent drainage. As a result, this soil composition contributes to the production of high-quality grapes for winemaking.

In Mendoza, vineyards are planted at altitudes between 500 and 1,400 meters above sea level. The advantage of cultivating vines at higher altitude lies in the significant temperature variation between day and night. This broad thermal amplitude, characterized by warm, sunny days and cool, crisp nights facilitates the gradual ripening of the fruit. The resulting grapes exhibit a  well balanced profile with fresher acidity, multiple layers of flavors, and an enhanced potential for aging.
